What is trigger point injection?

Trigger point injection (TPI) is a procedure used to treat muscle pain and tension. TPI involves the injection of a local anesthetic mixed with certain amount of neurotoxin (Botox or Xeomin) directly into a "trigger point”, which is a tight band of muscle tissue that is causing pain or discomfort. This can help to relieve the pain and tension associated with the trigger point. In some of the head and neck muscles, the injection would be onlythe neurotoxin.

How long does the treatment last?

The duration of the effects of trigger point injection (TPI) can vary depending on the individual, the location of the injection, and the severity of the muscle tension or pain being treated. In general, TPI can provide immediate relief of pain and muscle tension, but the duration of the relief can vary.

For some individuals, the effects of TPI can last for several weeks, months or forever. However, for others, the relief may only last for a few days. In some cases, TPI may need to be repeated multiple times to achieve longer-lasting relief.

Body posture, proper exercises and recommended work outs can help to prevent future head and neck muscles pain.

To maximize the benefits of TPI, other therapies may be recommended; such as physical therapy or stretching, to address the underlying causes of the muscle tension or pain and prevent it from recurring.
