A cavity is the result of the wearing down of your tooth enamel until a hole has formed in the tooth. Even though tooth enamel can arise due to numerous causes, they are usually caused by the foods that you eat. Preventing cavities begins with eating a healthy diet and eliminating the buildup of plaque and acid producing bacteria.

Cavities arise due to a breakdown in the tooth enamel that protects your teeth. Tooth enamel is a thin layer on your teeth that can be eroded or destroyed, typically by harmful acids due to plaque buildup. If plaque begins to accumulate in your mouth, the bacteria within the plaque can convert harmful ingredients like sugars into acids known for eating through tooth enamel. Eliminating plaque is a key step in preventing cavities.

The best way to protect your mouth from the dangers of plaque is to brush and floss every day. The ADA (the American Dental Association) recommends brushing your teeth twice every day and flossing once every day for effective plaque prevention. In addition, make sure to use a clean toothbrush with soft bristles that can reach all areas of your mouth. For dental floss, find a dental floss that is shred resistant. As an alternative, use a water flosser instead of threaded floss. Make sure to effectively clean all areas of your mouth daily to ensure no areas are left for plaque to accumulate.
