Periodontal disease is one of several factors that can contribute to gum recession.  If you believe that you may be experiencing gum recession we encourage you to contact our practice at 714-974-0949 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Randy Cockrell in Anaheim Hills, California.  Our dentist and team are here to help you!

Gum recession, or gingival recession, refers to the progressive loss of gum tissue.  It is most common in adults over the age of 40, but can often begin during the teenage years.  Gum recession is a gradual process, making it difficult to diagnose in the earlier stages of development.  Symptoms of gum recession include:

  • Sensitive teeth due to root exposure
  • Visible roots – one of the main characteristics of severe gum recession
  • Teeth that appear longer
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Inflammation and bleeding, both of which are also characteristic of gum disease

When you visit our practice, our dentist will carefully evaluate your mouth to determine the cause of your gum recession.  Once the cause has been determined, we will be able to recommend an appropriate treatment.  The most common causes of gum recession include:

  • Overaggressive brushing
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Use of tobacco products, especially chewing tobacco
  • Periodontal disease

As gum recession is a fairly common problem, there are a number of surgical and non-surgical treatments available.  Our dentist will recommend a treatment based on your oral health and on the cause of your gum recession.  If overly aggressive brushing techniques are the cause of your gum recession, we may recommend a softer toothbrush and a gentler brushing technique.  If poor oral hygiene is the problem, regular prophylaxis may be recommended to rid your mouth from bacteria and debris.  In the case of a severe build-up of tartar, scaling and root planing will be recommended.

After the cause of your gum recession has been addressed, our dentist may recommend a cosmetic or restorative treatment, such as gum tissue regeneration or gum grafting, to help you regain an aesthetically pleasing smile.
