Should I Get a Composite Filling?

Posted .

If you have a cavity in a molar or a premolar, your dentist can likely take care of it with a gold or amalgam filling. These fillings are strong, long-lasting and can withstand the pressure that comes with biting and chewing. But what happens if you get a filling in a front tooth that is visible to other people? In such a case, you will probably want a filling that is not so easy to notice.

In such a case, our dental team here at Randy Cockrell, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry can use a composite filling to fix the problem. Composite fillings are a mixture of powdered glass and acrylic resin. This composite is easily molded into the cavity and bonds directly to the surface of your tooth. But the greater appeal of a composite filling is the fact that it can be colored to match the rest of your tooth.

First, your dentist will remove the decayed tooth material. After coloring the composite to match your tooth, he will apply it in layers. Each layer must be cured before the next one can be applied. When the last layer has been applied, the dentist will polish the filling to make it stain resistant. However, your composite can be stained over time, and you should keep that in mind when you are having a meal or a snack.

If you have a tooth that needs some attention and you would like to find out if a composite filling is right for you, it’s time to have an examination and consultation with our dentist, Dr. Randy Cockrell at Randy Cockrell, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Anaheim Hills, California.
